There is a Girl in the Section!
It is a wonderful thing to be a woman, playing tuba well around the world. Traveling as a female tubist is important. It breaks alot of stereotypes, defys many expections and ideas of what a girl is, or is supposed to be. It is more than women’s lib, equal rights, or girl power.
It is being what you want to be, no matter what that is. It is constantly being told you can’t, and having roadblocks placed in your way, but figuring out a way to get around them and do what you want to do anyhow. It is figuring out how to accomplish what you’ve been told is “not possible”, “not proper”, “not ladylike”, that you are “too small”, “too short”, “not male enough”, “strong enough”, that you “lack the balls” and letting your sound and technique speak for itself.
It is being willing to sit with the guys in the back row, figuring out how to fit in, enduring the jokes, having a sense of humour and a thick skin at the same time, and being tough enough to handle whatever comes. It’s about being a girl, who loves music, and is hopelessly a tuba player.
